SKORPIOS III PATAGONIA - The Kaweskar Route
Patagonia Chile
380 miles of navigation visiting the fjords and glaciers of the Southern Ice Field.

Skorpios III Cruise, Patagonia Chile, Torres del Paine, Glaciers, Patagonia, Chile

One only loves what one knows and only guards what one loves… born in this island dotted sea; territory in which volcanoes and glaciers create illusions and, where legends become real in the secret Fjords… this is the land of the Skorpios in the Chilean Patagonia… we invite you to become acquainted with it. The M/V Skorpios III, sets sail every saturdays evening from Puerto Natales, located 247 km to the north of Punta Arenas, on a five day cruise through the channels and fjords that border the Southern Ice Field, in the Chilean Patagonia, which is considered to be the third largest reserve of fresh water on the planet and crib of the biggest and most spectacular glaciers in the southern hemisphere. There are two options to reach the region of Magallanes: flying to Punta Arenas or comming overland from Argentina. From this city, passengers must be transferred to the Skorpios Terminal in Puerto Natales. The maritime route commences through the Kirke Narrows, moving towards the north through the Morla Vicuña, Unión Inlet, Collingwood, Sarmiento, Concepción and Wide channels, to anchor in a beautiful area known as the Eyre Inlet. Monday, along with the early light of dawn, the motorvessel Skorpios III approaches the Pío XI Glacier, the largest in South America with total surface area of 1,263 km2, which is located in the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. Around 12:30 hrs, the return trip is initiated through the Eyre Inlet, Grappler channel, and Paso del Indio. Debarking in Puerto Eden, which is located some 400 km’s to the north of Puerto Natales. Situated on the Isle Wellington, its first inhabitants correspond to the native tribes of the region, the Kaweskar and Alacalufes. Currently there are still some living members of these ethnic groups, tribes that are now on the point of extinction.

Itinerary

EXPLORATIONS AT SKORPIOS III

This route will take us to the very end of the American continental territory with its pioneer towns and human settlements located in the depth of our southernmost geography. Our first contact will be with Punta Arenas, the most important Chilean city in Patagonia.
Founded in 1848 on the shores of the Straits of Magellan, the channel that joins the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This city has everything a modern tourist might need, ranging from an airport to top level state of the art boutique hotels. Puerto Natales is 250 kilometers north east of Punta Arenas, it was founded in 1911 on the shores of Señoret Fjord and is currently the most vigorous city in the region and an important tourist centre.
The Skorpios Terminal is located 3 kilometers from the town on the road that leads to Torres del Paine; from here we will board M/V Skorpios III to follow the Route of the Kaweskar towards Southern Ice Field, which is the third most important reserve of freshwater – the element that is vital to sustain life – on the planet.
